More than fifty paintings from the Yale Center for British Art are on view at the Yale University Art Gallery through December 3, 2023. The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to engage with the YCBA’s collection while the museum is closed to the public for a building conservation project. The exhibition spans four centuries of British landscape and portraiture traditions, with works by Mary Beale, John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, Gwen John, Angelica Kauffman, George Stubbs, and Joseph Mallord William Turner, among others. Several of these paintings were on view at the Gallery in 2015, where they were featured in The Critique of Reason: Romantic Art, 1760–1860, the first major collaborative exhibition between the two Yale art museums. --- ---
In a New Light occupies the special-exhibition galleries on the fourth floor of the Gallery’s Kahn building, which opened in 1953 and was the architect’s first significant commission and the first modernist structure on Yale’s campus. Directly across the street, Kahn’s final building, the YCBA, was completed after his death and opened to the public in 1977.

When the Royal Academy of Arts in London was founded in 1768, Dr. William Hunter (1718–1783) became its first professor of anatomy. A physician and obstetrician to royalty, Hunter amassed an extensive collection of objects that ultimately became the foundation for one of the first public museums, The Hunterian in Glasgow, Scotland. The range and diversity of the collection illuminates the artistic, medical, and intellectual pursuits of the Age of Enlightenment. — —
This exhibition features over three hundred objects from Hunter’s original collections, which were donated to the University of Glasgow upon his death. Bridging Hunter’s age with our own, the display also includes works by four contemporary artists—Selva Aparicio, Claire Barclay, Nate Lewis, and Maya Vivas—which provoke social and philosophical questions about the worlds of medicine and anatomical dissection, and about the understanding of the origin of life and the eventuality of death, which lie at the heart of Hunter’s researches into human pregnancy. The exhibition thus contemplates how objects of different kinds, perspectives on the body, and museums themselves have mediated, and continue to mediate, our understanding of one another and the world in which we live. — —
Hunter envisioned his collection to be used as a source of knowledge and instruction, encompassing outstanding paintings and works on paper, coins and medals, minerals and fossils, anatomical and zoological specimens, ethnographic material, shells, insects, medieval European and Eastern manuscripts, and rare books, along with one of the most important “working” libraries of eighteenth-century London, with publications by friends and contemporaries such as David Hume and Adam Smith. — —
Every piece of Hunter’s collection informed investigations into the nature of creation, helping to shape the scientific and artistic endeavors that would give rise to the structures of much of the modern world. Hunter’s investigations call to mind the cycle of life; they seek to understand the history of civilization (from an eighteenth-century perspective), and they focus at their heart on the nature and origins of life itself. At the same time, scrutiny of the collection reveals the socioeconomic inequalities and the colonialist, imperialist, and patriarchal imperatives of Hunter’s day, which were inextricable from the making of the museum. --- ---

This exhibition explored the story of three remarkable German princesses: Caroline of Ansbach, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, all of whom married into the British royal family in the eighteenth century. Caroline and Charlotte became queens consort to George II and George III respectively; Princess Augusta never achieved this distinction but held the titles of Princess of Wales and Princess Dowager, and was mother to King George III.
Through their wide-ranging intellectual, social, and political interests, Caroline, Augusta, and Charlotte helped to shape court culture and the age in which they lived, and would leave a lasting legacy. They encouraged the greatest philosophers, scientists, artists, and architects of the day; and they brought art, music, dance, enlightened conversation, and experimentation into the palaces and royal gardens, and supported industry, trade, and imperial ambition. The exhibition included many important works of art and manufacture that belonged to these women and their families, or were commissioned by them. Works by Hans Holbein, William Kent, Allan Ramsay, Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Thomas Gainsborough, Johan Zoffany, and many more were on display. The artist Yinka Shonibare MBE (RA) (b. 1962) also created a sculpture, Mrs Pinckney and the Emancipated Birds of South Carolina (2017), specifically for this exhibition. — —
Enlightened Princesses focused on five themes, explaining the princesses’ activities and interlocking contributions over the course of their lifetimes. Firstly, “Cultures of Learning: Powerful Conversations” examined how Caroline, Augusta, and Charlotte built pivotal relationships with leading cultural and intellectual figures of their age, and the far-reaching consequences of those exchanges. This lead into a consideration of “The Court as a Stage,” not only in the literal sense for the performance of music, dance, and theater but also as a political and cultural arena in which the princesses had to navigate the inherently political nature of public and private life. “Royal Women: Mothers of the Nation” considered the princesses’ engagement with evolving contemporary philosophies about childhood, both as active contributors to the educational programs devised for their own children and in their public roles as encouragers and protectors committed to the development of wide-reaching philanthropic projects. Next, “To Promote and Protect: The Princesses and the Wider World” showed how the princesses supported enterprising industrialists and furnished their own homes and developed their gardens so as to champion national manufacturers and the produce of empire. Finally, a concluding section on “Political Gardening” showed how Caroline, Augusta, and Charlotte explored contemporary garden philosophies and exercised their architectural ambitions for both personal and political ends, all the while reacting to a volatile commercial environment as well as a changing perception of the bonds between the dynasty, nationhood, and empire. — —

Enlightened Princesses: Caroline, Augusta, Charlotte, and the Shaping of the Modern World ?was a collaboration between Historic Royal Palaces and the Yale Center for British Art. The exhibition was also on view at Kensington Palace from June 22 to November 12, 2017. The lead curator was Joanna Marschner, Senior Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, assisted by Samantha Howard, Curatorial Assistant. The organizing curator at the Center was Amy Meyers, Director, who was assisted by Lisa Ford, Assistant Director of Research; Glenn Adamson, Senior Research Associate; and Tyler Griffith, Postdoctoral Research Associate. — —
The exhibition was accompanied by a publication of the same title, a beautifully illustrated catalogue of works edited by Joanna Marschner, with the assistance of David Bindman and Lisa Ford. Co-published with Historic Royal Palaces in association with Yale University Press, the book features contributions by an international team of scholars.

As its chief contribution to Yale’s tercentennial celebrations, the Center brought together about seventy masterpieces of British painting from both public and private collections across the United States. The selection offered a fresh and beautiful account of the history of painting in Britain from the sixteenth century to the present. It included some of the familiar landmarks of British art, along with works of superlative quality that are little known since previous exhibitions and publications on the subject have drawn largely on British collections. — —
Among the highlights was a group of works from the magnificent British holdings of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The exhibition traced the history of Anglophile collecting in the States, and the inclusion of painting from the Center’s own collection highlighted the originality and importance of Paul Mellon in this context. — —

Paul Mellon collected George Stubbs with a passion and an instinctual feel for his qualities. The very first painting Mellon ever purchased was Stubbs’s Pumpkin with a Stable-Lad (1774). He also collected Stubbs comprehensively, even systematically, acquiring drawings, prints, enamels, and Stubbs’s only publication, The Anatomy of the Horse. There is a range and a depth to this collection that no other public or private collection can rival. — —
The Center published a handsome, fully-illustrated book to accompany this exhibition. Designed by Greer Allen and Julie Lavorgna, it has an introductory essay by Malcolm Cormack, Paul Mellon Curator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and contributions by the curatorial staff of the Center. The book formed part of the Center’s tribute to its munificent founder and brought together for the first time the most remarkable and comprehensive collection of George Stubbs ever created. — —

For the first time since it opened to the public in 1977, the Center exhibited eighty of its greatest masterpieces outside the walls of the museum. The show, spanning four hundred years of British painting, was divided into thematic sections that illustrated the history of British culture and painting from the sixteenth century through modern times. The exhibition provided a narrative of Paul Mellon as a major collector of British art and highlighted his enormous contributions that established the museum’s collection.

The zebra in this painting was owned by Queen Charlotte and was the sole survivor of a pair brought back from Southern Africa in 1762 by Sir Thomas Adams, the commanding officer of HMS Terpsichore. Though it wasn’t the first zebra on British shores—Prince Frederick had kept zebras at Kew in the 1740s—it was certainly the most visible. Charlotte’s zebra lived in a paddock near Buckingham House, where it was made available to a public with a thirst for exotic animals, spawning several, sometimes bawdy, tributes to “the Queen’s she-ass.” Beyond satire and public curiosity, the zebra was the subject of great scientific interest, as evidenced by Stubbs’s meticulously painted portrait, which may have been made with the assistance of the anatomists William and John Hunter. Stubbs’s incongruous setting (more forest glade than tended paddock) creates an air of melancholy, suggesting both the wonder and the costs of the Enlightenment. --- ---

This was the first zebra to be seen in Britain and was sent from the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) aboard hms Terpsichore as a present for the young Queen Charlotte. It is not known why Stubbs painted her—the picture was still in the artist’s studio when he died in 1806—but he may have gained access to the queen’s menagerie at Buckingham House through the influence and interest in exotic animals of his friend Dr. William Hunter, who was accoucheur to the queen. By this date the zebra or African “she-ass” was a London celebrity and not only attracted widespread interest, but inspired the following rude song, which survives in a printed broadsheet:\n\n
Ye Bucks and ye Jemmies who amble the Park,\n\n

This is one of the earliest in a long series of paintings of exotic animals, many of which Stubbs produced for his friends William and John Hunter, the Scottish anatomists and men of science. Stubbs may have met John Hunter in connection with the procurement of cadavers that the older, more socially established, and more medically experienced William dissected for his pupils and other interested people in the basement of his London town house. We do not know why Stubbs painted Queen Charlotte's zebra, or African "she-ass," nor why the painting was still in his studio at his death, but it has long been presumed that access to the animal was arranged by William Hunter, who served regularly as accoucheur to the queen.\n\n
This was in fact the first zebra to be seen in England. It was brought from South Africa in 1762 by Sir Thomas Adams, the commanding officer of H.M.S. Terpsichore, as a gift from the governor for young Queen Charlotte. Two live specimens were dispatched from the Cape of Good Hope in what Malcolm Warner has described as "Noah's-ark fashion," but only the female survived the voyage. As soon as she reached London, the zebra was installed in the menagerie at Buckingham House (Buckingham Palace) and became an instant celebrity. "The Queen's she-ass," wrote one observer, "was pestered with visits, and had all her hours employed from morning to night in satisfying the curiosity of the public. She had a sentinel and guard placed at the door of her stable. . . . The crowds that resorted to the Asinine palace were exceeding great," (MacClintock, 1992, p. 4).
In fact, she also inspired a number of rude songs.-.
including this one that circulated in broadsheets:\n\n
Ye Bucks and ye Jemmies who amble the Park,\n\n
Whose Hearts and whose Heads are as lightsome\n\n
as Cork,\n\n

Stubbs's grasp of the anatomical differences between zebras and horses is, of course, masterly, and in the present work the backward direction of the ears, the dewlap on the underside of the neck or the front, and the "gridiron" pattern of the stripes on the nether regions, immediately above the tail.-.all these are exactly consistent with zoological verisimilitude and, in fact, identify the present animal as the smallest of three subspecies of zebra, the Cape Mountain. "The Queen's Ass" survived until 3 April 1773, perhaps in spite of sharing its accommodation in due course with an elephant and being moved to the Tower of London.\n\n

The Zebra is possibly the first, and arguably the most beautiful, of the documentary studies of exotic species that Stubbs painted alongside his better known sporting pictures and fantastic scenes of horses attacked by lions. Typically, he brought to the subject the detailed anatomical knowledge he had gained through his dissections of horses, as well as habits of painstaking inquiry, observation, and drawing from nature. The result is an image of objectivity and precision, recording special characteristics of the animal such as the particular backward lean of the ears, the dewlap on the underside of the neck, and the "gridiron" pattern of stripes on the back immediately above the tail. By comparison, the efforts of contemporary engravers to represent it appear absurdly crude and conventional, showing merely a horse or donkey with stripes added.
This was the first zebra to be seen in Britain. From Stubbs's painting it can be identified as a Cape Mountain Zebra, the smallest of the three distinct zebra types. It was brought from the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) by Sir Thomas Adams, captain of hms Terpsichore, for presentation to Queen Charlotte, who was a keen collector of unusual animals. In Noah's-ark fashion, Adams took on board a male and a female, but only this, the female, survived the voyage, arriving in Britain in the summer of 1762. The "painted African ass" (as it was sometimes called) was installed at Buckingham House, the royal residence recently bought by the queen and her husband George III, and became the object of much public interest. "This animal," the London Magazine of July 31, 1762, reported, "from her majesty's good natured indulgence, has been seen by numbers of people, and is now feeding in a paddock near her majesty's house." As a biographer of the Queen later noted:
The Queen's she-ass…was pestered with visits, and had
all her hours employed from morning to night in satisfy
ing the curiosity of the public. She had a centinel and
guard placed at the door of her stable…The crowds that
resorted to the Asinine palace were exceeding great.
The zebra was the talk of the town, even the subject of a bawdy song entitled "The Queen's Ass." Later it was joined at Buckingham House by an elephant and eventually moved to the menagerie at the Tower of London. It died on April 3, 1773, after which its skin was preserved, stuffed, and displayed with other animal curiosities in a touring exhibition.
By portraying the royal zebra against an obviously British rather than African landscape, presumably representing the park at Buckingham House, Stubbs underlines the idea of the scene as directly observed rather than imagined. Here is the animal just as it appeared to him and the rest of its British audience-incongruous almost to a comic degree, with its stripes acting as the opposite of camouflage. Surprisingly, he seems to have painted the work without a commission, whether from Queen Charlotte, George III, or any other interested party, and it remained in his possession throughout his life, appearing in his studio sale in 1807. Perhaps he always intended to keep the work with him, to serve as a kind of advertisement, recognizing such an entirely foreign, "virgin" subject as the ideal showpiece for his abilities as a naturalist-painter.
