The Crystal Palace was originally erected in Hyde Park, London, England, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. From 1852 to 1854, it was reconstructed at a new site in Sydenham, and the original Hyde Park design was modified with the addition of two additional transepts. The structure stood at this final location from 1854 until its destruction by fire in 1936.
"These Crystal Palace book-markers were woven there [i.e. at the Crystal Palace], for an 1868 advertisement gives the address 'Machinery Department, Crystal Palace, Sydenham,' and notes 'Where a loom producing these beautiful specimens of silk weaving may be seen in operation daily, and specimens obtained."--Godden.
A woven picture, machine-embroidered on silk. On white silk in red, purple, green, black, and gold.
