Each plate is signed by Engelbrecht at bottom right, with a privilege statement at bottom left. A small set are additionally signed: "Ierem. Wachsmuht inv. et del." All are numbered, but the numbering is non-consecutive and does not align with the sequence of plates as bound.
Bound in contemporary boards, spine simply stitched with three cords. There are traces of an early manuscript note on the front cover (not legible).
Album of ornamental designs issued by Martin Engelbrecht, printmaker at Augsburg. The volume comprises 197 leaves of oblong plates, each numbered in pen and black ink in the upper corner. Most plates include multiple images (as many as 50), with contemporary hand-coloring throughout. A few leaves are trimmed close to plate marks at head or foot, and a small number have lost content with the trimming. One plate has had a single small figure neatly cut out.
The images were designed to be used decoratively, either as exemplars or cut out and combined to form composite scenes, often on boxes, walls or furniture, or as scenes for telescopic peepshows. Engelbrecht issued thousands of plates in this format (plate numbers extend into the 3000s in this album), sometimes in suites of several related plates, but often individually, from which the buyer would choose their own combination. The plates rarely remain in the large quantity found in the present album. The breadth of images represents an enormous archive of popular imagery and iconography.
