Plan for the Citadel at Hull.

The plan includes a small elevation of a church behind the fortification (in the area of Drypool). This is presumably St. Peter's Church, which was replaced by a newer structure in 1822.
Provenance: From the collection of George Legge, first Baron Dartmouth, 1648-1691 (see Sotheby's sale, March 8-10, 1948). Baron Dartmouth was Master-General of the Ordnance to Charles II and James II. His collection of maps was partly abstracted from Royal map collections, an arrangement described by Pepys in Bodleian Library MS Rawl. A. 171, 17r-20v. See also Skelton and Wallis. "This plan of the Citadel is unsigned, but is unmistakably in the hand of Sir Bernard de Gomme. Circumstances would seem to plate it early in 1681, and perhaps following the instructions given to Major Martin Beckman on 14 May 1681 to survey the town. There is no indication that de Gomme visited Hull himself but his design for a citadel accurately reflects the main topographical features and was probably based on Beckman's survey. De Gomme's design is triangular in form with one long side incorporating the central castle and south blockhouse of Henry VIII's defences along the eastern side of the River Hull. ... De Gomme's plan seems to lay down broad guide-lines for Beckman, who ultimately produced a more coherent design ..."--Saunders, pp. 229-231.
