Rambles with the camera

A smaller album of photographs by Henry Ledger ("Views of England: Torquay, Lewisham, Kent, Yorkshire, etc.") is in the collections of the The J. Paul Getty Museum (84.XA.876.15). A third album ("A month with the camera in the North Highlands of Scotland by an amateur--August 1854") is cited in Impressed by light.
Bound in contemporary gilt-stamped leather, with title stamped on the front cover. With tissue interleaving throughout the album.
Previously owned by Andy Warhol. The front cover bears Sotheby's printed label for "The Andy Warhol Collection [lot 2917]"

At the time the present album was compiled (in the 1860s), the photographer Henry Ledger may have lived at the foot of St. Marychurch Road, opposite Torquay Town Hall. He and his family are depicted at this house (called "Glenthorne") in photographs on leaves 46-51. Torquay is the most popular subject in the album, especially the neighborhoods of St. Marychurch, Babbecombe, and Watcombe. A number of images depict the rocky coast in and around Torquay, including Anstey's Cove. The album also includes Ledger's photographs from travels farther afield, in Kent, Surrey, Scotland, Hyères, and Gilbraltar. The photographs of Gibraltar are accompanied by a note attributing the images to Sir William Codrington, Governor of Gilbraltar, "no one else being allowed to do so." The travel photographs include images of Hever Castle, Cary Castle, Balmoral Castle, Wells Cathedral, and Exeter Cathedral. Most of the photographs are accompanied by captions in graphite, with Ledger's initials (on the mount). A minority dated, primarily near the end of the album.
Portrait photographs are included on leaves 1 (a large portrait of Henry Ledger), 68, and 96-100. Most appear to depict Henry Ledger and his family. Some of the portraits are cartes de visite, from the studios of [William?] Croft, Torquay; Elliott & Fry, London; John & Charles Watkins, London; and Maull & Co., London.
