The photograph depicts an unidentified bearded man in white work coat, standing in the doorway to a building that presumably contains his (unnamed) shop. Immediately in front of the building (on the sidewalk) is a large display of wares, especially metalware -- most prominently metal tubs and watering cans. Rugs and brooms are also draped on the racks. Items bear large tags, presumably with prices. Above the doorway is a sign: "Try Sensation Soap." This probably refers to the Sensation Soap produced by David Thom & Co., of Pendleton (Manchester). Advertisements for the soap appear in British periodicals ca. 1887.
