Notes
A series of three carte de visite photographs of Queen Victoria, all derived from a portrait of the Queen by John Jabez Edwin Mayall. Mayall's original photograph is one of series of 14 portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert taken in May 1860. Mayall's original depicted Queen Victoria seated in a dark dress, a fan in her right hand, her left hand drawn towards her chin. There is a table of props to Victoria's right. See link herewith for a version of the original image, from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
Each of three images in the present set modifies Mayall's original. Carte a re-crops the image in an oval shape, excluding most of the studio backdrop. Cartes b and c redraw the image, almost entirely. Both add framed portraits of Albert on the wall behind Victoria. Both introduce a window to Victoria's right (and with Windsor Castle visible in carte c).
Cartes a and c lack text. Carte b is printed on the verso: "The album portrait gallery of celebrated personages." -
