HAWKSMOOR's CAREER, writes Kerry Downes, 'was to an unusual degree that of a back-room boy. He was first the pupil, then the valued assistant, and perhaps finally the partner of Sir Christopher Wren, and in the first years of the eighteenth century he worked for, and with, Sir John Vanbrugh'. Yet Nicholas Hawksmoor remains one of the most individual figures in the history of English architecture. His work ranges from the 'Roman' grandeur of Easton Neston or the Castle Howard Mausoleum to the 'Gothic' of All Souls, Oxford, and the Baroque' of Christchurch, Spitalfields. All these terms have to be given in quotation marks, for Hawksmoor fits into no category. No other English architect has surpassed him in the eloquent use of stone, and few have equalled the mixture of skill, learning, gravity and wit that underlies his often massive designs. -- book jacket.
