Sketchbook comprising 33 portrait studies, in graphite, of Edwardian era actors and opera singers in character. The first drawing is dated 1903, and the captions to many of the subsequent drawings include dates of performance. The captions also frequently note the theater of performance, with many productions from His Majesty's Theatre or Covent Garden. All drawings are unsigned, but the sketchbook has provenance from the studio of the artist George Holloway (1882-1977). Holloway was (in years postdating the present sketchbook) a captain in the Royal Artillery, a printer for Holloway and Sons, an entertainer, and a member of the Bristol Savages art group.
