Bound in blue wrappers, front cover stamped in gilt and titled "Improved sketch book."
Sketchbook containing 13 drawings, each initialled "A.M." and dated from 1867 to 1869. Most of the drawings are humorous in tone, commenting on current fashions. There are also several portraits. The artist has inscribed the volume "Anna Mountlove [?], October 1867"; the spelling of the surname is difficult to decipher.
The sketchbook opens with a comic drawing titled "The tables turned," with dialogue: "Nurse: Did you ring, ma'am? Naughty little girl: No, I rang. Take mama away please. She's very cross and disagreeable." Other drawings include: "Les diverses positions occupées par le Chapeau"; "The height of fashion"; "Beautiful for ever"; several portraits of young ladies; and a "Curious entomological study made from our stall the other evening."
One drawing, "The newest sea-side fish-n" (depicting a lobster hat, and flat-fish shawl) is also present in another album in the collections (YCBA Rare Books and Manuscripts, NC1479 .P46 1869), suggesting that this was a popular image at the time.
