The work proposed here was probably issued from 1802 or 1803 to 1806 or 1807. Advertised as "In the press, and will be ready in two months" in The British critic, vol. 20 (Aug. 1802), p. 224. Three numbers were published at the time of Stubbs's death, according to his obituary in The gentleman's magazine, v. 76 (Oct. 1806), p. 979. "William Upton recorded that the first number had been completed just before he visited Stubbs in late August 1803"--Lennox-Boyd, p. 313. "The evidence of the watermarks suggests approximate publication dates for the three numbers of text of 1802, 1804 and 1807 respectively"--Lennox-Boyd, p. 316.
"Subscribers names taken in at Mr. Stubbs's, Somerset-Street, Portman-Square, and at Mr. White's, bookseller, Fleet Street."--Recto.
"No list of subscribers survives. The Royal Academy subscribed for copies, receiving the first two numbers in January and February 1804. The third and last number appeared in 1806."--Egerton, J. George Stubbs, p. 567.
"At Mr. Stubbs's may also be had the following prints: The farmer's wife and Raven, with its companion The labourers ...; The haymakers and Reapers ...; A horse affrighted by a lion, with its companion Tygers at play ...; A lion devouring a horse--a horse affrighted at a lion--two tygers--a lion--and a tyger ...; A lion, a tyger and two dogs ...; three prints of single dogs ...; and his book of The anatomy of a horse ..."--Foot of the recto, with dimensions and prices for each print.
