Proof engravings of the 121 illustrations in: Willis, Nathaniel Parker, 1806-1867. American scenery, or, Land, lake, and river : illustrations of transatlantic nature, from drawings by W.H. Bartlett ... London : George Virtue, 26, Ivy Lane, MDCCCXL [1840]. The engravings are printed on (mounted) India paper. They include the artist and engraver names, but lack titles and publication information. Titles are written in graphite, in the bottom margin.
Each of the two volumes contains the full set of 121 engravings. Both appear to have belonged to the publisher, George Virtue, who had them identically bound in green half morocco and green cloth, all edges guilt. Both copies were given to Virtue's sons, volume 1 to James S. Virtue, volume 2 to George Henry Virtue; their bookplates are present in the respective volumes. Volume 2 is inscribed: To George Henry Virtue, from his affectionate father, October 21st 1852.
