Notes:
Fourth in a series of costume books published by William Miller. Plates are copied and enlarged from a book by J.C. Georgi published by W. Müller in St. Petersburg in 1776-1780 in 4 v. Text for this English edition is attributed to William A. Alexander. A new edtion of this book appeared in 1804 with Bulmer as printer, uniform with the others in the series printed or reprinted this year. A reprint of the second edition is represented by Abbey T245. Cf. Abbey.
Added title page in French: Costumes de l'empire de Russie ...

Leaf of descriptive letterpress in English accompanies each plate with text translated into French on verso.

BAC: British Art Center copy is the Abbey copy. Lacks the dedication present in the 1803 edition (T 244). Bound in gilt- and blind-stamped green morocco. Gilt edges. Bookplate: Sir Harry Niven Lumsden. Watermarks: Text: 1818. Plates: 1819/1820. Later reprint, as shown by the watermarks, of the 1804 edition of this book, which had first been published in 1803. It is likely that the this late reprint was in fact published by Thomas M'Lean who took over these 'Costumes' in 1818 and reprinted the series adding his own The military costume of Turkey. Cf. Abbey.
