- Notes:
- The album is inscribed at front: "Sarah Annette Jones from her Papa, June 1854." Sarah Annette Jones (born 1836) was the the niece of John Henry Vivian, of Bryn Newydd, on Sketty Green in Swansea. J.H. Vivian was father of Henry Hussey Vivian, 1st Lord Swansea, to whom several of John Dillwyn Llewellyn's photograph albums were once wrongly attributed.
There are 78 photographs present in the album. There are captions for an additional 14 photographs no longer present. Photograph nos. 7, 20 and 73 are no longer affixed to the page (removed to separate folder). Also removed to the folder are three commercially produced travel photographs: The Chancel, Roslin Chapel, 61, G.W.W. [George Washington Wilson, photographer] -- Queen's View, Killiecrankie, 10,700. G.W.W. -- Edinburgh Castle and National Gallery, 12067, J.V. [James Valentine, photographer]
The album includes photographs of people and places, primarily in Wales. Most of the people depicted are members of the Eden, Vivian, Lindsay, Denman, and Lennox families. Locations depicted include Singleton Abbey, Sketty Hall, and Oystermouth Castle. Also included are Mary Dillwyn's photographs of flowers and birds.
Most photographs are captioned and dated in black ink, with the initials or name of the photographer. Based on the signings, photographers include Mary Dillwyn, John Dillwyn Llewellyn, and Captain Augustus Lennox. Photographs with initials A.P.V. are probably by Sir Arthur Pendarves Vivian. C.E.E. may refer to Caroline Eden. - Subject Terms:
