Notes:
A note in a much later hand at the front of the album attributes the manuscript (presumably the copied text and the original drawings) to Mary Smith of Cropwell Butler, Nottinghamshire. The basis of this attribution is unclear.
In general text and illustration appear on one side of a leaf, usually on facing pages.
Leaves of the album are watermarked 1846.
The album intersperses short excerpts from William Burkitt's Expository notes (first published in 1700) with original drawings, most in watercolor. A small number of drawings feature religious subjects, but most depict flora and fauna, especially flowers and birds.
