Notes:
Bound in full red leather, tooled in gold and black; gilt edges. The front pastedown bears the ink stamp "Valentine & Sons, photographers."
In the contents note, the titles of photographs are transcribed as they appear within the photographs, along with Valentine & Sons numbers (paired with the initials J.V.). The firm introduced its numbering system in 1878 (see: Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography, page 1433).
The album contains 52 photographs of scenes in Scotland made by Valentine & Sons (Dundee, Scotland), a leading publisher of topographical views. One photograph is mounted to each page (on the rectos and versos of each leaf), except on pages 48 and 49, which contain two photographs each. The foot of each photograph includes the image caption and numbering (the text appears in white). Captions for two photographs mention a "Queen's view." This is presumably a reference to the series of 40 Highland views commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1867.
