Reproduction of a manuscript (no. 8022) preserved in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal at Paris and designated by the title "Livre des sauvages". The publication of this manuscript, claimed by its editor to be a specimen of the picture-writing of the American Indians, called forth numerous articles and pamphlets, attacking its authenticity. Among these are Julius Petzholdt's "Das buch der wilden" im lichte französischer civilisation, Dresden, 1861, and J.P. Meissner's Wahre erklärung des "Buches der wilden", Leipzig, 1862.
The manuscript is lithographically reproduced.
