Manuscript commonplace book with entries written in ink by Susan Hammond from the Bailiwick of Jersey, containing a selection of epitaphs, epigrams, hymn texts, excerpts of verse and prose, and musical texts. Following Hammond's introductory reflection at the front of the volume, the word "Melange” is written to resemble the title page of a printed book. The volume also includes a several vignettes drawn in graphite and ink. Many of these drawings feature views of cathedrals and castles, including Wells Cathedral and Elizabeth Castle. The organization mimics the appearance of a printed book in its use of headings and imitation of plates (illustrations). - Subject Terms:
