Address and date, "15 New King Street May 2o 1841," are written at the head of the letter. Each page of the letter is numbered in the top corner. The letter also features traces of the original wax seal near the written address to "J.J. Gabourel [illegible] of Colomberie, St Heliers, Jersey."
Autograph letter, signed by John Le Capelain informing J.J. Gabourel, possibly Jean Josué (also known as John Joshua) Gabourel, of the promising progress that Miss Harriet has made in her study of miniatures and Miss Ann in her artistic studies, and advising on how his pupils should proceed in their studies until his return. Capelain recommends that Miss Ann study from nature with a sketchbook and pencil, "a little color added to give more completeness to the effect," and extends the same advice to Amelia. He also describes the process for painting miniatures, from preparing the ivory and attaching it to a piece of Bristol Board, to drawing the outline with a brush and painting on the ivory. He specifies the materials and tools that "are essential to the producing a good miniature," including a drawing of the brush and lancet to be used, and specifying the type of water that should be used to paint.
