"The Ricky Jay Collection features more than ten thousand objects, ranging in size from postage stamps to billboards, and including books, pamphlets, monographs, and opuscules dating from the sixteenth century to present times. While largely known for its holdings of material on magic and deception, the collection is much more expansive than might be imagined and covers almost the entire spectrum of public attractions and remarkable characters. Mr. Jay's interests were numerous ; the subsequent pages are intended to provide a representative look at his many fascinations, including automata, spirit photography, circus acts, unusual entertainments, menageries, early museums, gambling, cant, and low life. Mr. Jay was a world-renowned sleight-of-hand artist and respected collector, and this collection was built during a half-century of his professional travels" -- page 9.
