The front pastedown bears a prospectus, dated May 1877, for Braithwait's The Sphagnaceae or peat-mosses of Europe and America (London: Hardwicke and Bogue).

The title leaf, dedication, and index are printed. The 54 remaining leaves bear mounted specimens of 53 varieties of peat moss. Each peat moss species is accompanied by a numbered label giving the title, name, authority, and collecting data. Some species are represented with multiple mounted specimens. For each, there is also one or more mounted envelopes containing an unmounted specimen.
"The prospectus [for the present work] said there would be 50 copies at 25 shillings each, though in the end there were 66 sets ... ; it is probable that sets are not identical."--Sayre.
