"The Exotic and the Beautiful, a catalogue of color plate books from the collection of Norman R. Bobins, captures a remarkable period of discovery and development in world history. A time of change and advances in printing meant innovations in architecture, in landscaping and, most importantly, in the means of travel were documented in colour by artists as explorers for the first time. Steam power, a Scottish discovery, brought railways and steamships, the latter narrowing the Atlantic and making the exotic a reachable reality for Europeans to witness and record. Also including a wonderful series of handcolored sporting prints by Alken in the early 19th century, many never seen and not in major collections"-- Book jacket.
