- Though unattributed, the diary is probably the work of George Burton Osborne, retired Paymaster Captain in the British Navy. In the entry for November 13, 1939, Osborne notes the death of his mother, Julia Elizabeth Powel Osborne, aged 92. The 1939 England and Wales Register (Saltash, Cornwall) lists George B. Osborne as Secretary for the Royal United Service Orphan Home for Girls, Stoke; he lived with Irene J.H. Osborne (born 1884), listed as "Command 1st aid post."
Manuscript diary, kept from January 1, 1939, to September 22, 1941, probably written by George Burton Osborne, of Saltash (Plymouth), England. The majority of diary entries follow Britain's entry into the Second World War (on September 3, 1939), after which war events are the primary focus. A significant number of entries record Osborne's notes on the heavy German bombing of Plymouth in 1941. Diary entries are accompanied by numerous newspaper clippings.
