Bound in contemporary gilt-tooled brown leather.
Manuscript commonplace book compiled by George Humphrey. Copied texts, in several hands, include a mix of verse and prose, on subjects including love, death, bashfulness, curiosity, civility, flirtation, marriage, happiness, solitude, and the pursuit of doing good. Some entries are signed and dated, with most made in the 1850s. The first 61 pages are indexed at the front of the volume.
The volume is also illustrated with nine drawings (some watercolors). The last of these depicts Cetewayo, King of Zululand (from 1873 to 1879).
