Notes:
Cyril James Swanne (1891-1928) served in the 15th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment of the British Army. The regiment landed at Boulogne-sur-Mer in November 1915 for service on the Western Front. It moved to Italy in November, 1917, and back to France in April, 1918.

The drawings provide a record, often humorous, of Cyril Swanne's infantry service during the First World War. Most drawings are captioned and initialled. Over half are drawn on postcards; those mailed are addressed to his mother, in Birmingham. Subject matter includes trench life; food, drink, and supplies; and the perils of battle.
