Notes:
Consists of 56 etched plates by Henry Thomas Alken, all inlaid within a panel with an elaborately engraved border surrounding the print. Plates 1-40 have titles in pen and ink; plates 41 to 56 are untitled, with space previously occupied by the panel for a title included in the engraved surface of the larger illustrations.
Title is in manuscript, in pen and ink.
Abbey notes a copy with a variant title, in manuscript: Military duties, occurrences &c. &c. / by Henry Alken ; collected and published by Thomas McLane.
Abbey suggests date of publication is probably before 1820. The spelling of the publisher's name as McLane and not McLean places it before 1830, and the few plates that portray actual historical incidents all illustrate the Russian campaign against Napoleon. By 1830, the work of Alken was devoted to sporting subjects only. Index to British military costume prints suggests a publication date ca. 1828.
