This essay was originally read to the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 6 April 1797, and was printed first in their Transactions (IV:2, 1798, pp. 3-27). An enlarged version of the essay was published in 1813.
ESTC suggests 1797 as the publication date, however, vol. 4 of the Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh was published in 1798.
