Loudon was a prolific writer on landscape gardening and a follower of Richard Payne Knight and Uvedale Price whose belief in "irregularity and picturesque grouping" he shared; the leading principle of his "characteristic or natural" style was to create or heighten the natural character of an estate; Loudon did not typically regard himself as a practicing architect, although he did complete many architectural designs as is evident in this work; cf. Archer; Colvin, H. Biog. dict. of British architects, p. 524-525.
