Biographical/Historical
The Yale Center for British Art oral history collection features interviews with a large variety of individuals who have been associated with the YCBA in their lifetimes. This includes individuals associated with gift by Paul Mellon to establish the YCBA in 1966, people who were actively involved with the original design, implementation, management, and opening of the museum in 1977, architects involved in the 2015 YCBA conservation project, undergraduate student guides at the YCBA, as well as former YCBA curators, directors, librarians, registrars, museum assistants, staff, community members, and former students. The interviews are conducted by Yale Center for British Art staff members, Graduate Museum Fellows (GMFs), and New Haven Promise interns. The GMFs in particular have made substantial additions to the collection. -
Scope and Content
The Oral History Collection is comprised of audio files, video files, and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with individuals who have contributed to the history of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA). These individuals include former staff, Yale professors, and those who worked closely with the YCBA’s benefactor and founder, Paul Mellon (1907–1999, Yale ’29), and with the YCBA’s principal architect, Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974). The interviews range from 2017 to the present. The program is active, meaning the collection will continue to grow. Interviews are organized by interviewee last names and year of interview. Interviews vary from one interview per interviewee to a series of interviews with one individual. Restricted interviews are not listed in the finding aid. Questions regarding interviews may be sent to the YCBA Archives Department. -
