In 1811 William Bernard Cooke commissioned J. M. W. Turner to produce designs for Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England (1814-26), a series of line-engravings focusing on the area of the country most vulnerable to French attack, and celebrating the nation's military and economic strength. James Hakewill's views of Jamaica have close affinities with the Southern Coast engravings such as this one, and it seems extremely likely that Hakewill was familiar with the series.
