Inscribed in pen and brown ink, center: "Sir Robert Smirke's Continental Tour | Accompanying These Folio Volumes | of Sketches [which] he found in drawer | in Pedestal - his Journal & interesting | letters - giving the history of his Early Tour | in pursuance of Study of all objects | of Interest architectural & otherwise | while visiting the several countries in | the Continent between the years 1802 and 1804 | these drawings have been collected & placed | in order / as nearly as possible / according to | the dates of the letters & his family. In the | Several Places visited by him in his | Tour. Through the Continent - additional | interest is attached to his Tour Through | Greece - as refined & in the notes - to his Journal."
