Created by John Constable (1776-1837), the artist; by descent to his son, Lionel Bicknell Constable (1828-1887) [1]; by descent to his sister, Isabel Constable (1822-1888); purchased at auction by Leggatt Brothers Ltd., London, England, at Christie, Manson & Woods, June 17, 1892 (lot 246, 'Flatford Lock, with barge'), in "Works of the late John Constable, R.A" [a]; acquired by Leicester Galleries, London; purchased by Burton Mansfield (1856-1933), New Haven, CT, 1906 [b]; purchased by Leo Elwyn & Co. at American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, New York, April 7, 1933 (lot 8, 'Flatford Lock'), in "Choice oil paintings" [c]; acquired by private collection, New York [2]; purchased at auction by Davis & Long Company at Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, May 29, 1980 (lot 4, 'Flatford Lock'), in "19th century European paintings" for Paul Mellon (1907-1999) [d]; by whom given to the Yale Center for British Art, 1999.
