Alexander Dickson graduated in medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He was professor of botany at Trinity College, Dublin, 1866-68; professor of botany at the Royal College of Science, Dublin, 1867-68; professor of botany at Glasgow University, 1868-79; professor of botany, Edinburgh University, and Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, 1879-87.
