Title from letterpress caption at the foot of the print.The wood-engraved image appears to have been printed from six blocks.This print commemorates the British railway pioneer, Joseph Pease (1799-1872). A prominent Quaker, Pease founded the Stockton and Darlington Railway, served in Parliament for South Durham, and served as president of the Peace Society. Most of the image area depicts two kneeling men holding a framed portrait of Joseph Pease. The portrait may be reproduced from an engraving by Thomas Lewis Atkinson. An inset at bottom depictions Locomotion no. 1, the first steam locomotive to haul a passenger carrying train on a public railway. The inset is titled "S. & D.R. no. 1, 1825."
