Gallery Label:
Smirke, one of the most prolific book illustrators of the early nineteenth century, produced illustrations for several editions of the Arabian Nights, of which these may be examples. The Arabian Nights were first translated from Arabic into French by Antoine Galland in 1704-17 and almost immediately published in translation in England, where they became enormously popular and influential.
