...To make Lodgements on ye Covert way is attended with great difficulty & hazard, there are different Methods of doing it, 'tis here represented as carried on by open force, at ye Shoulder Angles the Assailants are Attacking ye Covered way, first firing on ye Enemy, & then rushing on ye with sword in hand; while at ye Sallient Angle, that is at ye Angle with points towards ye field, the approaches are carrying on with ye Demy Sap, Yet it is to say with an artificial Trench made with Gabions or large baskets staked into ye ground & filled with bags of earth as fast as possible; from behind these the assailants do what execution they can, & send granadiers sustained by bodies of foot, or dismounted dragoons to force ye Palisades, when they have push't those who defend ye Covert way, ye Engineers form ye Lodgment or Parapet of Gabions Canon Proof, to which are made several foot banks, and if it is ensiladed or flank'd from the place, they make winding traverses from space to space
