A preliminary study for the frontispiece to John Fayram’s "Eight Views after Nature” (1739), a suite of prints dedicated to Thomas Hervey (1699-1775), Superintendent of the Royal Gardens. A print after this drawing is in the British Museum (1895,1031.20) along with the variant frontispiece used in the final publication (1895,1031.19). Little is known of Fayram save that he was a subscriber to Kneller’s Academy and made his living as a portrait painter and copyist. He worked for the Hervey family from the late 1720s and throughout the 1730s; two portraits of Thomas Hervey are still at Ickworth, Suffolk (National Trust, 851823 and 851825). Fayram also produced landscape and marine prints from his own designs and in 1743 he became drawing master at the new military academy at Woolwich but seems to have died shortly afterwards. --- --- Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2014
