Born in 1918, Cyprian Chandos Richard Waller Waller-Bridge was the fourth child (and only son) born to Elsie and Reverend Horace Waller-Bridge. He led a comfortable childhood, attending St. Peter's Court School, at Broadstairs, before his education continued at Eton. He joined the British Army Infantry as the Second World War broke out, serving in the Middle East as an officer in the "Buffs" Regiment and also with the Special Operations Executive. In 1946, he married a Greek woman, Lina Kaloyeropoulou, in Athens. Cyprian would divorce Lina in 1952, going on to marry Jill Auriol Harvie, with whom he had a son, Michael Cyprian Waller-Bridge (born 1953).
Childhood scrapbook of Cyprian Waller-Bridge, compiled by his mother, Elsie Noeline Waller-Bridge. She notes, on the flyleaf, that the album was "Given to Cyprian by me 3.5.36," when he would have been eighteen years old. Cyprian was the fourth of the Waller-Bridges' six children. All six of the children are pictured throughout the scrapbook: Elsie (Feb. 4, 1914-2000), Noeline (April 8, 1915-1983), Theodosia (1917-ca. 1970), Cyprian (Feb. 27, 1918-April 18, 1960), Florence (November 15, 1919-1973), and Etta (1925-1955). The photographs focus primarily on Cyprian, chronicling his infancy, boyhood, and early adulthood, from his birth in 1918 through the 1940s. The images are nearly all captioned, in pen and black ink, with detailed descriptions of people and places, as well as occasions. Although the scrapbook was presented to Cyprian in 1936, there are a few items that date beyond this year, suggesting that Cyprian's mother continued to add a few items to it.
There are a few textual items in the scrapbook, including correspondence (cards, letters, telegrams), newspaper clippings, and other printed ephemera. All relate to milestones or special events in Cyprian's life: his baptism, his coming-of-age festivities, his marriage (to his first wife, Lina), and his service in the British Army Infantry ("The Buffs" regiment) during the Second World War. A handwritten catalog of infant milestones (dates of first solid meal and first tooth) and illnesses is included at the end of the album. There are a couple of newspaper clippings related to Cyprian's performances in theatrical productions.
The family appears to have had two homes, including the Worth Rectory, in Sussex, and a family estate at Cuckfield, Sussex. They had a well-staffed household, including an attentive nurse ("Nurse Boggiss"), an "Under-nurse," and a nanny, all of whom are pictured with the children at various times. In the images, the children are dressed in various fashionable outfits of the 1920s and 1930s.
