Hunt made a number of studies of rustic interiors: stables, barns, workshops, sheds, farm houses, and mills. In contrast to his usual minute rendering of detail, Hunt’s handling in this watercolor is particularly inventive, forming the image through broken patches and strokes of color, bold lighting, and liberal use of scratching out.
