Gwen John’s achievement as an artist was long overshadowed by both her romantic relationship with the sculptor Auguste Rodin and the fame of her brother, Augustus John (whose work is shown alongside). But Gwen John is now recognized as a finer artist than her more extroverted brother and as a major twentiethcentury painter in her own right. She left Britain for France in 1903 and lived and worked in Meudon, outside Paris, for the rest of her life. Her work appealed to Paul and Bunny Mellon for its quiet, contemplative character and fusion of both British and French influences.
