While L. S. Lowry would become famous for his industrial townscapes (one of which is shown nearby), his earliest surviving work, made at the age of fourteen, was a pencil drawing of yachts. This was made at Lytham St. Annes, a town combining Lytham and St. Annes-on-Sea on the Lancashire coast, then a popular resort near Blackpool for residents of the large industrial cities of northwest England. Lowry enjoyed vacations there as a child and remained attached to the region for the rest of his life. These two coastal views are both derived from the coastline on or near Lancashire’s Fylde coast.
