In 1793, Sir Francis Burdett married Sophia Coutts and commissioned full-length portraits in oil of himself and his new wife. Burdett had recently returned from a Grand Tour and had been in Paris in the early days of the French Revolution. In Britain he was soon elected to Parliament and established himself as a political reformer. This highly finished drawing was made by Lawrence as a study for the finished oil painting now in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
