John Linnell was Samuel Palmer’s father-in-law, and while the two had much in common, there were also deep differences. Palmer was a Tory and High Church Anglican. Linnell was radical in politics and a fervent Baptist. Both, however, used representations of the English countryside to articulate religious and political beliefs. In this small landscape, Linnell transposes the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt to an English woodland.

Linnell was Palmer's father-in-law, and while the two shared much in common, there were nonetheless deep differences between them. Palmer was a visionary, and a Tory and High Church Anglican; Linnell more radical in politics and a fervent Baptist. Both, however, allowed representations of the English countryside to articulate religious and political beliefs. In this small landscape Linnell transposes the scene of the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt to an English wood.
