Inscribed in graphite, on back, along left edge of paper: ""Zebra", designed & engraved by Thomas Bewick, finished at Newcastle by Sol[?sal]omn Has[...] 17(last two numbers cut off), [...](last two words partially cut off)"; lower left corner: "Hugo 3379 / or 3381"; lower right: (IXYA C-14) (Hugp 3381)"; inscribed in brown ink, on accompanying sheet: "A wood cut of a "Zebra" designed and engraved by Thomas Bewick | ____ Newcastle: printed by Solomon Hodgson (?Hoopson). A.D. 1799. ____only | 150. copies printed ____This cut was engraved for Mr Pidcock, while he | was in Newcastle, with his celebrated collection of wild beasts. _________ | Mr. Bewick had a few impressions taken off on drawing paper; which | as (well as the 3 preceeding) are now very seldom to be met with (?wish) _________ wiA(?wish) 1[...]60"
